American Pie’ Actress Detained by ICE Renewing Visa Says ‘I Have Never Seen Anything So Inhumane
Jasmine Mooney, known for her roles in American Pie, Kid Cannabis, and iZombie, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while trying to renew her work visa. The Canadian actress attempted to cross the U.S.-Mexico border on March 3 but was held at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego.
Mooney described the ordeal as a “deeply disturbing psychological experiment.” She was forced to sleep on a mat with no blanket or pillow, wrapped in aluminum foil “like a dead body” for two and a half days. “I have never in my life seen anything so inhumane,” she told San Diego’s KGTV 10.
The conditions were harsh. The food was so poor that Mooney refused to eat, leading to significant weight loss. She also recounted being moved in the middle of the night with 30 other women to a facility in Arizona. “We were up for 24 hours, wrapped in chains,” she said.
The exact reason for her detainment remains unclear. Some speculate it may be linked to her role as co-founder of Holy! Water, a brand selling hemp-based drinks. ICE officials reportedly criticized her paperwork, claiming it lacked a proper letterhead.
Mooney was eventually released and returned to Vancouver on Saturday. “I still don’t even know how I’m home,” she said. “My friends, family, and the media are the reason, I think, that I’m home.”
Her story has sparked outrage, shedding light on the treatment of detainees in ICE facilities.
