New Zealand Election Heads for a Close Finish as Cost of Living Dominates Campaign

New Zealand’s general election is heading into a close finish, with the cost of living and the economy dominating the final days of campaigning. Voters are scheduled to go to the polls on Saturday, November 7.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and opposition leader Chris Hipkins made final appeals on Thursday as polls showed no clear majority for either bloc, according to Reuters reporting. Smaller parties could hold the balance in parliament, and post-election coalition talks may take time.
Household costs are a central campaign issue
Reuters reported that a new Ipsos survey found inflation and the cost of living remained voters’ leading concern. Healthcare, fuel prices and the broader economy also featured prominently. The campaign has unfolded against a sluggish recovery and rising unemployment, putting pressure on the governing National-led coalition’s economic record.
Advance voting began on October 26. By Tuesday, more than 1.25 million votes had been cast, compared with about 1.01 million at the same point before the 2023 election, Reuters reported, citing Electoral Commission data.
Smaller parties may shape the next government
New Zealand’s proportional voting system often requires parties to form alliances to govern. Reuters said the centrist Opportunity Party could become a pivotal partner if neither major bloc secures a clear path to a majority. The final result may therefore begin a period of coalition negotiations rather than immediately settle who governs.
The official timetable says polling places will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time on election day, with preliminary results released that evening. The final outcome will determine whether voters keep the current coalition or shift power to a Labour-led grouping.
