Sweden to Reinstate Internal Border Checks for Six Months

Sweden will reintroduce temporary checks at its internal borders for six months, beginning November 12, after the government cited security concerns linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine and hybrid threats within the Schengen area.
The measure is scheduled to run through May 11, 2027. Reuters reported that the Swedish government described the decision as a response to a serious threat to public order and internal security.
The planned checks apply at Sweden’s internal borders, including land, air and sea crossings, according to the government’s notice to the European Union. The temporary measure does not close the borders, but travelers may encounter identity checks when entering Sweden from other Schengen countries.
Sweden’s notice cites organized cross-border crime, hostile actors and security risks related to the war in Ukraine. The government said the checks are temporary and will be reviewed as the six-month period proceeds.
Travelers making plans for the period should check current entry requirements and transport updates before departure, as procedures can differ by route and crossing point.
