2025 Oscars: Full Winners List from the 97th Academy Awards — Top Highlights

The 97th Academy Awards unfolded as a night brimming with potential for shocks and surprises that largely failed to materialize. With the exception of the Best Actress race (more on that shortly), the evening played out predictably, with Oscars distributed across a wide array of films rather than one sweeping the board. Titles like Wicked, Emilia Pérez, Anora, Dune: Part Two, and The Brutalist all claimed multiple statuettes.

Here’s a rundown of the evening and the full roster of winners:

At times, it seemed every movie in contention might snag an award, so evenly were the honors shared. It wasn’t until the night’s end that The Brutalist and Anora pulled ahead, securing three and five wins respectively, with Anora ultimately clinching Best Picture.

Though Anora emerged as the night’s slight frontrunner, Wicked cast a spell from the outset. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo kicked things off with a musical medley that left no doubt (if anyone still questioned it) that Wicked was the year’s cinematic standout, even without the Best Picture crown.

The evening’s true jaw-dropper came when Mikey Madison nabbed Best Actress for Anora. The season had been a tight contest between her and Demi Moore for The Substance, with most bets on Moore after her Screen Actors Guild win—the biggest Oscar bellwether. Yet Madison’s dark-horse victories, including a stunning BAFTA upset, foreshadowed her triumph, bolstered by Anora’s sweep of the Director’s and Producer’s Guild Awards.

Anora’s helmer, Sean Baker, also etched his name in history, racking up the most Oscars won by one person for a single film in a single night.

Portraying Ani, a young sex worker entangled with a Russian oligarch’s son, Madison reflected, “I poured so much into breathing life into her. I knew her inside and out, which let me step into her skin effortlessly and feel every emotion she did.”

Host Conan O’Brien, meanwhile, struck a deft balance—his signature offbeat humor laced with a surprisingly fitting (dare we say dignified?) demeanor for the Oscars. His opening bit toggled between jabs at Timothée Chalamet (the suit, the youth, you name it) and Emilia Pérez’s Karla Sofía Gascón for her infamous tweets (if you’re in the know). Largely steering clear of politics, O’Brien still nodded to global woes—LA’s wildfires, a fractured political landscape. As Oscars emcees go, he was solid if not spectacular.

The night featured tributes aplenty, honoring the James Bond saga, Quincy Jones, and Gene Hackman. While mostly apolitical, O’Brien didn’t entirely dodge hot topics, grazing over Trump’s recent sit-down with Ukraine’s Zelenskyy, the Drake-Kendrick Lamar clash, and A.I.’s ascent.
